Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming film which stars Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana.
Princess Diana, also known as 'Lady Diana Spencer', was, of course, the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry. Diana's activism and glamour made her an international icon and earned her enduring popularity as well as unprecedented public scrutiny, exacerbated by her tumultuous private life. She tragically lost her life in a car crash in Paris in 1997, at age 36.
Diana didn’t just accept the world around her for the way it was and she used her role in the public eye to help causes that many others overlooked. Her legacy has had a deep impact on the royal family and British society.
Now, do you remember Kristen Stewart? The young actress rose to fame as the iconic Bella Swan in The Twilight Saga film series, which collectively grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide. She also starred alongside Jodie Foster in the hit drama, Panic Room for which she was nominated for a Young Artist Award.
A few months back, it was announced that Pablo Larraín was set to direct Kristen Stewart who would play Princess Diana in a film called Spencer. It was the royal casting news nobody saw coming.
“We all grew up, at least I did in my generation, reading and understanding what a fairy tale is,” Larraín told Deadline. “Usually, the prince comes and finds the princess, invites her to become his wife and eventually she becomes queen. That is the fairy tale. When someone decides not to be the queen, and says, I’d rather go and be myself, it’s a big big decision, a fairy tale upside down. I’ve always been very surprised by that and thought it must have been very hard to do. That is the heart of the movie."
When questioned about his choice of Stewart for the iconic role, Larraín did not shy away from his decision. “Kristen is one of the great actors around today,” he said. “To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile an ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature."
The producers have released a first-look image of Stewart as the iconic Lady Di with this synopsis: "During her Christmas holidays with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, Diana decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles."
The resemblance is uncanny. Here's a side by side:

"Holy cow she looks way better than I thought she would!" writes one fan.
"I actually think this is a good pick! First of all, I love Princess Di and the Royal Family did her wrong. But for those that don't think Di wasn't passive-aggressive and a bit dark herself....just like Kristen Stewart. I say bravo, can't wait!!" writes another.
The cast has also expanded Stewart will be joined by Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, and Sean Harris. Shooting is taking place in Germany and the UK, and the film is eying a fall 2021 release ahead of 2022, which will mark the 25th anniversary of Diana’s death.
