Ryan O'Neal Reunites With Tatum And Grandchildren For First Time In 17 Years

To say they have had a tumultuous relationship would be an understatement.

Ryan O'Neal was an amateur boxer before beginning his career in acting in 1960. You may remember him as Rodney Harrington on Peyton Place or from Love Story, considered to be one of the most romantic and highest-grossing films of all time.

O'Neal married his first wife, actress Joanna Moore, in 1963. They had two children, Tatum O'Neal and Griffin O'Neal, before separating in 1966.

For several years, O'Neal was estranged from his elder three children. "I'm a hopeless father. I don't know why. I don't think I was supposed to be a father. Just look around at my work—they're either in jail or they should be", he told Vanity Fair .

Tatum O'Neal, his daughter, is the youngest person ever to win a competitive Academy Award, which she won in 1974 at age 10 for her performance as Addie Loggins in Paper Moon opposite her father.

The father and daughter have had a tumultuous relationship, to say the least. In her 2004 autobiography, Tatum alleges physical and emotional abuse by her father, much of which she attributed to drug use. She also detailed her heroin addiction and its effects on her relationship with her children. Her father denied the allegations. In 2009 Ryan O'Neal admitted to hitting on Tatum at Farrah Fawcett's funeral after he didn't even recognize her as his daughter. In 2011, they attempted a short-lived reconciliation captured in the series Ryan and Tatum: The O'Neals.

This past Sunday, September 13, 2020, Sean McEnroe, son of Tatum posted a family photo of his grandfather Ryan O'Neal, 79, and his mother Tatum O'Neal, 56, alongside his siblings, Kevin, 34, and Emily, 29.

"This is one of the most memorable photos of my life. The last time we were all together was at the 30-year Paper Moon Anniversary in 2003. I could cry tears of gratitude that everyone in this photo is still alive and that we were all able to come together again after so many years of hardship. The entire West Coast is burning, but if the O’Neals can reconcile, truly anything is possible," Sean writes on his Instagram.

"Your caption said it all. ❤️🙏🏼," writes one fan. "After all the work is done, Healing can happen in an instant. 👑"
