'I was molested by a man when I was 18 while knocked unconscious in the back of a van,' he writes.
Matthew McConaughey is a loveable actor who had his breakout role in the cult classic 'Dazed and Confused'. Appearing in a great many films after, he received international acclaim for his portrayal of Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor.
The iconic cowboy actor who coined the phrase 'Alright, alright, alright', recently celebrated his 50th birthday.
The actor has published a candid, unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction. The dust jacket for Greenlights, by Matthew McConaughey, begins with a tantalizing reveal; "I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five."
"Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries. I found stories I experienced, the lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know-how, and when, to deal with life’s challenges—how to get relative with the inevitable—you can enjoy a state of success I call “catching greenlights.”
McConaughey is now a married man, a father of three children lives and lives in Texas with his wife Camila Alves and their three children: Levi, 12, Vida, 10, and Livingston, eight. He is a far cry from the bong-toking free spirit he was once seen as.
“I’ve done peyote in Real de Catorce, Mexico, in a cage with a mountain lion. I’ve had seventy-eight stitches sewn into my forehead, by a veterinarian. I’ve had four concussions from falling out of four trees, three of them on a full moon. I’ve bongoed naked until the cops arrested me.”
His memoir covers a great many fantastic topics and includes insight into his parent's marriage and his own marriage to Alves.
Greenlights also highlights some not so happy times. McConaughey gets candid with some shocking revelations, revealing that he was the victim of sexual assault, not once, but twice in his life.
“I was blackmailed into having sex for the first time when I was 15,” writes McConaughey in his memoir. “I was certain I was going to hell for the premarital sex. Today, I am merely certain that I hope that’s not the case.”
He later reveals that he was “molested by a man when [he] was 18 while knocked unconscious in the back of a van.” He does not go into details or mention it again in the memoir but goes on to explain that: “I’ve never felt like a victim, I have a lot of proof that the world is conspiring to make me happy”.
The book has received many good reviews including one from his always loving mother and supportive wife. 'One proud mamma!' writes his wife Alves in her Instagram caption. 'Greenlights book out TODAY!!!! Words can not express how proud I am of this work of love that Matthew did!!'
