Just in case you needed some good news for today, Jennifer Hudson has transformed into Aretha Franklin for a biopic on the singer's life, set to hit theatres in December.
The film, called Respect, of course, stars Jennifer Hudson in the leading role, with Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, and many more making appearances. Franklin herself was involved with the development of the film up until her death on August 16, 2018.
The official trailer made it's debut last night. June 28, 2020, during the BET Awards. Those watching the awards were treated to a powerful performance by Jennifer Hudson, who performed a rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Young, Gifted and Black”. She performed in a stunning emerald gown surrounded by back-up singers wearing all white.
"Ms. Aretha Franklin reincarnated. Ms. Jennifer, you did it once again. Sing it!" writes one fan. I would have to agree, this performance left me excited to see the movie.
In the trailer for Respect, we see Hudson belt out r-e-s-p-e-c-t with ease, it actually gave me goosebumps. Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, RESPECT is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice.
