Every parent dreams of hearing their child's first words. It's almost a right of passage. Not all parents get to experience this though.
Micah is a wonderful 5-year-old autistic and non-verbal boy. When his mother posted a video on social media on September 21, 2020, she was expecting the kind of response she got.
In the video, Micah's mother, Haley McGuire, explained that Micah does not talk. Many parents of children with autism have been told that if their child isn’t speaking by age 4 or 5, he or she isn’t likely to ever do so. According to Healthline , as many as 40 percent of autistic children don't speak at all. Others may speak but have very limited language and communication skills.
At five, Micah had spoken only a few words. When the video, captured by his family, was shot we can hear mom Haley's sister encourage Micah to say his name. Sounding it out, you can hear his family scream when Micah does it. They all huddle around him and one member of the family even picked him up and flipped him over.
The video is beautiful, raw, and powerful. It's not surprising that it has been viewed more than 2 million times.
His grin says it all.
Micah is an absolute gem. "MICAH YOU ARE SO SMART AND AMAZING," wrote TikTok user @nottooshabbyy.
"Okay I'm crying and I know nothing about the family this is so sweet," replied @ameliagarcia713.
Micah's family spoke with Newsweek and told them he hasn't stopped mimicking the family's words since the videos were filmed.
"It's been a day and a half now, and everything we ask him to say, he's copying," McGuire said. "He's not going out of his way to say anything on his own, but he's literally copying everything we say, which is crazy because he wasn't talking at all. Every now and then, he'd blurt out a word. But when I say 'wasn't talking,' he would go weeks without saying anything. This is crazy. He's been doing great."
"Please never stop believing! God is our healer!”
