There's a good chance you may have been wondering whatever happened to him.
Dennis Franz Schlachta or as you may know him, simply as Dennis Franz, is a retired American actor best known for his role as Detective Andy Sipowicz in the ABC television series NYPD Blue. He earned a Golden Globe Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four Primetime Emmy Awards for his portrayal as a gruff cop.
Franz often played a police officer and his resume also features appearances on the A-Team and Hill Street Blues. However, his portrayal of Detective Sipowicz is the role for which he is often remembered.
The character of Sipowicz was ranked #23 on Bravo's 100 Greatest TV Characters list. Franz also had a role in the Disney cartoon Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series in which he provided the voice of Captain Klegghorn, the commanding officer and head of the Anaheim Police Department.
In 1994 Franz made a cameo appearance as himself in The Simpsons episode "Homer Badman", in which Homer is accused of sexually harassing a babysitter.
When NYPD Blue ended in 2005, Franz retired from acting to focus on his private life.
“I needed a break,” he told the New York Post a few years ago. “I was just tired. ... When we finished up, I told my agents I needed a year off, and that year went by in about 10 minutes. I realized I’m pretty good at this and I’d like another year to think about what’s next — and during that second period of time, I sort of made my mind up that this is where I wanna be. I just wanted to live an enjoyable, irresponsible, spend-time-with-my-family kind of life. I haven’t regretted one minute of it. I’m pretty good at doing nothing.” He did indicate he might return for the right role, but that has not happened yet.
Franz told the Los Angeles Times during the second season of NYPD Blue back in 1995, Andy Sipowicz was, by the actor's count, the 28th police officer he'd portrayed across television, movies, and theater.
Dennis Franz hasn't acted onscreen since 2005, his last portrayal of a fictional character coming with the final episode of NYPD Blue.
