The Westminster Arcade, also called the Providence Arcade, Arcade Providence, or The Arcade, is a historic shopping center at 130 Westminster Street and 65 Weybosset Street in downtown Providence, Rhode Island.
It was built in 1828 and gained fame aor being the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States. Unfortunately it fell into decline in the late 20th century.
After being closed for renovation and rehabilitation several times Arcade Providence most recently reopened its doors as a residential and commercial mixed-use building!
After an extensive renovation, it is now home to 48 micro-loft apartments on the upper two floors, with a first floor of small business retail, including a full service local foods restaurant, a coffee shop/whiskey bar, casual dining, and several unique retail shops.
The micro-apartments range from 225 to 275 square feet. For comparison, a standard one-car garage is about 200 square feet.
So far, residents are generally young professionals who don't have much stuff, and so don't mind living in such cramped quarters.
The microlofts have been a success and are fully occupied. There is a wait-list if you are interested .
